Retailer identifies $1.5 million in annual savings

Kogan.com lifted approval rates above 98% through its partnership with Riskified and identified $1.5 million in annual savings from tighter control of fraud and policy abuse.

Founded in Melbourne in 2006, Kogan.com serves more than 3.5 million customers across Australia and New Zealand. Its brands include Kogan.com, Dick Smith, Mighty Ape, Matt Blatt and Brosa.

Across that retail network, Kogan also sells mobile, internet, energy, insurance, money and travel services. Riskified trades on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker RSKD.

As an online-only retailer, Kogan handles card-not-present transactions on every order. That model raises fraud risk and also increases the chance of false positives blocking legitimate customers.

Identity Engine and Chargeback Guarantee

Beyond direct fraud, Kogan faced serial policy abusers, promo misuse and subscription chargebacks that cut into margins. Manual chargeback management also added work without improving outcomes.

Rohan Dhaygude, Deputy CFO at Kogan.com, said: “We wanted a solution that could truly perform, without impacting customer experience.”

Kogan chose Riskified for its Chargeback Guarantee model, AI-powered decisioning and deeper identity-based insights. Together, the companies worked to strengthen fraud prevention, improve approval coverage and map customer behaviour more clearly across the ecommerce journey.

Using Riskified’s Identity Engine and Identity Explore capabilities, Kogan gained more visibility into repeat policy abusers, promo misuse and customer-level profitability. Richer device intelligence and behavioural signals helped Riskified identify fraudulent actors with greater precision.

Meanwhile, Riskified’s machine learning models were continuously trained on Kogan’s transaction data. As a result, Kogan improved decisions on higher-value purchases and first-time customers.

Riskified also said the partnership helped Kogan approve more legitimate customers with greater confidence while protecting the shopping experience. Automated dispute management reduced manual overhead and improved dispute outcomes.

Chargeback rates stayed below AusPayNet thresholds. Those results came as Kogan managed large ecommerce volumes across Australia and New Zealand.
