From Manuscript to Print will run at City Library on Saturday 25th July
FolioFox and Dettori Publishing will co-host a 90-minute pre-press workshop for self-published and indie authors at City Library, Melbourne, on Saturday 25th July.
The session, titled From Manuscript to Print, starts at 10:30am. Tickets cost $25, and Emerging Writers Festival members can get a 20% discount.
Ann Dettori will lead the workshop. She is the founder and chief executive of Dettori Publishing.
Dettori also brings experience from Post Pre-press Group and Independent Ink. Through those organisations, she has supported both traditional publishing companies and indie authors.
Book production topics at City Library
During the Melbourne session, authors will learn the differences between traditional, hybrid and self-publishing models. The workshop will also explain the benefits of each route.
Attendees will then move through the main stages of book production. Topics include editing, proofing, design, typesetting, formatting, marketing and printing.
Organisers have also included guidance on working with publishing specialists. That section covers how authors can collaborate professionally with designers, editors and printers.
Another part of the programme focuses on protecting a writer’s work as an indie author. It introduces tools to help authors navigate that process.
Each attendee will receive a comprehensive workbook. The material will summarise key workshop points and provide tools and resources for the next stage of self-publishing.
2025 Alliance of Independent Authors report
FolioFox and Dettori Publishing created the event in response to a lack of resources for self-published authors in Australia. According to the organisers, that gap shaped the workshop’s focus on production, collaboration and author protection.
A 2025 Alliance of Independent Authors report found that indie authors in Australia are earning more and growing at a healthier rate than traditionally published authors. As a result, the workshop targets writers who want clearer guidance before sending a book to print.
