City Library event offers self-publishing guidance

FolioFox and Dettori Publishing will co-host a 90-minute pre-press workshop for self-published and indie authors in Melbourne on Saturday 25 July. Called From Manuscript to Print, the session starts at 10:30am at the City Library.

Tickets cost $25. Emerging Writers Festival members can get a 20% discount, and places are limited.

Ann Dettori, Founder and CEO of Dettori Publishing, will lead the lecture-based workshop. She will focus on the knowledge, tools and pre-press steps authors need before taking a book to print.

Attendees will receive a workbook that sums up the key points from the 90-minute session. They will also get tools and resources to support later self-publishing work.

Ann Dettori workshop lead

Dettori Publishing oversees Post Pre-press Group and Independent Ink. Through those organisations, Ann Dettori has supported both traditional publishing companies and indie authors.

Post Pre-press Group works with traditional publishers and corporations. Independent Ink supports authors who choose to self-publish.

Because Dettori has worked across both parts of the industry, the Melbourne session draws on experience from traditional publishing and indie publishing. That background also ties the event closely to print preparation.

Organisers created the workshop in response to a lack of resources for self-published authors in Australia. Meanwhile, more writers are choosing to publish without traditional publishing intervention.

According to the Alliance of Independent Authors report The Big Indie Author Data Drop 2025, indie authors in Australia are earning more and growing at a healthier rate than traditionally published authors. As a result, FolioFox and Dettori Publishing are pitching the event at a growing part of the market.

City Library will host the in-person event on Saturday 25 July from 10:30am. Unlike an online session, the Melbourne format gives writers face-to-face guidance on early pre-press work.

FolioFox is co-hosting the workshop with Dettori Publishing for aspiring authors who want to self-publish their own books. Following the event, attendees will leave with a workbook and practical resources for their next steps.
