Exploring AI and Ecological Change
Opening during SXSW London 2026, Maja Petric’s latest exhibition, ‘Specimens of Time: The Glitched Sublime’, offers a unique blend of art, AI, and ecological commentary. Hosted by HOFA Gallery, it presents technology as a medium for perceiving and connecting with the natural environment.
Petric’s practice, developed over more than two decades, integrates custom AI, robotics, light, and real-time environmental data. The goal is to create an experience where ecological change directly generates artistic form instead of merely depicting it.
Using live climate data from the Arctic, Petric collaborated with AI scientist Mihai Jalobeanu to bring this vision to life. In the Arctic, warming occurs at twice the global average, destabilizing seasonal conditions vital for life. Arctic poppies briefly bloom in these challenging conditions before temperatures rise too high for their survival.
Lightbox sculptures and pigment works, generated by custom robotics and AI, respond in real-time to this live climate data. This approach creates a physical record of environmental change.
Innovative Engagement at SXSW London 2026
Aligning with the festival’s focus on artificial intelligence, automation, and the future of human experience, the exhibition enters into conversation during SXSW London. It proposes a trajectory for technology that emphasises ecological memory and reconnection with nature, contrasting with contemporary AI culture.
On Wednesday, 3 June, from 11:40 to 12:10, Petric will present ‘Art, Tech & Nature: The Glitched Sublime’ at Protein Studios (Stage 2). She will also join the panel ‘Worldbuilding for the Senses: When Art Meets Experience Meets Brand’ on Thursday, 4 June, from 16:10 to 16:50 at Truman Brewery (Truman Stage 1).
Open to the public during SXSW London 2026, the exhibition provides attendees an opportunity to engage with art that showcases real-time environmental change through innovative technological integration. For further information, contact Alessandro Gallini.
