Event Supports Dementia Awareness and Research
The 2026 Ballarat Memory Walk & Jog is scheduled for Saturday, 2nd May, at Lake Wendouree Gardens. Less than two weeks remain before the event, which aims to bring the community together to promote brain health and support those impacted by dementia.
This annual affair is organized by Dementia Australia and serves as a major fundraiser. It helps provide essential support, education, and resources for the over 446,500 Australians living with dementia and more than 1.7 million people involved in their care. These efforts are crucial in advocating for positive change and supporting vital research initiatives.
Participants can choose to walk, jog, or run, with options including a 2km walk, a 6km walk/jog, or a 12km timed run. The event encourages community spirit through physical activity, which plays a significant role in maintaining brain health and potentially reducing the risk of developing dementia.
Promoting Brain Health
While factors like age, genetics, and family history are unchangeable, evidence suggests that staying active and socially engaged can help delay or reduce the risk of dementia. This event highlights how physical activity and social connection are vital components of brain health.
For those unable to attend the Ballarat event, Dementia Australia offers a MyWay option. This allows individuals to organize their own walk or jog at a convenient date and location. Participants can register through the official website.
Dementia Australia’s National Dementia Helpline, available at 1800 100 500, offers round-the-clock support. This service is funded by the Australian Government, ensuring comprehensive assistance for anyone impacted by dementia.
