Largest Commitment to AI and Cybersecurity

Microsoft is set to invest A$25 billion in Australia to enhance AI infrastructure, cybersecurity, and workforce skills by the end of 2029, as announced on 23rd April 2026.

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, made this announcement alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, marking the company’s largest-ever investment in the country.

The investment will significantly expand Microsoft’s Azure AI supercomputing and cloud infrastructure within Australia. New initiatives are targeting the strengthening of national cyber defenses and the training of three million Australians in AI-related skills by 2028.

“We want to make sure all Australians benefit from AI. Our National AI Plan is all about capturing the economic opportunities of this transformative technology while protecting Australians from the risks,” stated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Expanding Cybersecurity and Collaboration

The Microsoft-ASD Cyber-Shield will be extended to more government agencies, enhancing collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs to improve national security. This initiative aims to deepen the cyber resilience of Australia.

Jane Livesey, President of Microsoft Australia and New Zealand, commented, “Microsoft is committed to helping deliver Australia’s National AI Plan with this historic investment in digital infrastructure, cyber resilience, and workforce-ready AI skills.”

Collaborating with the Australian AI Safety Institute, Microsoft aims to ensure safe and responsible AI use across industries. This collaboration will set a precedent for industry-first dialogue with workers.

These initiatives, following a previous A$5 billion investment in 2023, are expected to significantly boost Australia’s AI capabilities and economic resilience. job creation and innovation will be supported across the nation.
