New Drilling Won’t Solve Aussie Petrol Pain

Electric Vehicles: A Path Forward

The Climate Council has revealed that new oil drilling in Queensland will not alleviate Australia’s rising petrol costs, despite federal calls for expanded oil and gas exploration. Their Pedal to the Metal report, released today, outlines the challenges with relying on fossil fuel projects. The need for more sustainable energy solutions is urgent as Australian motorists paid over $1 billion more in fuel costs than usual in March alone.

According to the report, producing more oil is not a quick fix. It will take years to develop and will not effectively lower energy costs. Instead, it will contribute to increased climate pollution. The report emphasises that Australia already produces five times more gas than it needs, indicating that increasing gas supply won’t necessarily improve energy security or affordability.

Challenges with New Refineries

Australia’s two remaining refineries depend on government subsidies to operate. Establishing new refineries would require substantial financial support and take years to become viable. They would do little for long-term energy security. Despite these challenges, federal politicians continue to push for new drilling projects.

Electric vehicles and hybrids are currently saving 15 million litres of fuel per week, a figure that has tripled over the past three years. These vehicles not only reduce fuel consumption but also cut climate pollution significantly. The Climate Council recommends redirecting public funds to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, providing immediate financial relief to motorists.

The Climate Council is an independent, community-funded organisation that provides evidence-based information on climate change impacts and solutions. For more information, visit their website or contact their media team.
