Gulpilil exhibition presents One Red Blood in Prahran from 1st May

One Red Blood: Gulpilil in the Landscape will open in Melbourne, presenting aerial photographs taken on 29th November 2021 that appear to show the likeness of David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu. The images were captured more than 500 kilometres away in Victorian salt lakes on the same day of his passing.

The exhibition brings together unmanipulated drone photography, traditional pandanus weaving and film works. It has been developed under the direction of Phoebe Marson Gulpilil, alongside Damian Walshe-Howling and Eamon Wyss.

According to exhibition material, “On the day David Gulpilil passed, his face emerged from the landscape – 500 kms away.” The photographs form the foundation of the exhibition, presenting natural patterns observed from above without alteration.

Eamon Wyss contributes a series of abstract aerial works that document the salt lakes. The images remain unedited and focus on the land as recorded, highlighting natural formations that suggest a human likeness.

Traditional weaving from Bula’Bula Arts is also included. These works originate from Arnhem Land and reflect cultural practices connected to Gulpilil’s home community in Ramingining.

The exhibition also features moving image works. Damian Walshe-Howling presents his short film MESSiAH (2016), alongside reflections on his collaboration with Gulpilil. In addition, Savage Films and Brindle Films contribute an extract from Journey Home, David Gulpilil.

Phoebe Marson Gulpilil has structured the exhibition through family lineage. Her involvement connects the works across mediums and situates them within cultural continuity.

Exhibition material states, “New stories emerge from the land – stories that speak to who we are today”. The works collectively explore how stories are expressed through land, image and cultural practice.

Furthermore, the exhibition draws on Gulpilil’s belief in shared connection. His words are included in the presentation, stating, “We are the brothers and sisters of the world. Doesn’t matter if you’re bird, snake, fish or kangaroo. One Red Blood.”

The exhibition runs from 1st May to 13th June 2026 at Midnight in Paris Gallery in Prahran. Entry is free to attend.
