Changes Aim to Enhance Support for Rural GPs

SYDNEY — The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has welcomed new changes to the Workforce Incentive Program, aimed at providing better support for rural doctors. Announced this week, the reforms are designed to remove barriers preventing rural GPs from accessing incentive payments, according to RACGP.

Under the revised guidelines, the total full-time equivalent (FTE) of doctors will now be assessed based solely on their service in rural and remote areas, specifically Modified Monash Model (MM) 3–7 locations. This change ensures that doctors who also work part-time in metropolitan settings are not excluded from receiving incentives, RACGP confirmed.

Implications for Rural Healthcare

RACGP Rural Chair Associate Professor Michael Clements stated that these updates better reflect the current working realities of rural GPs. “This sensible reform will allow rural communities to receive the healthcare they need,” he said. Previously, GPs working part-time in urban areas faced challenges in qualifying for the program, which offers payments up to $21,000 annually.

The announcement aligns with ongoing efforts to support rural healthcare through flexible workforce models that include advanced skills services like emergency medicine and obstetrics. The RACGP has been advocating for these changes, emphasizing the need for policies that accurately reflect the contributions of rural doctors.

The RACGP believes that these reforms will lead to better retention of skilled GPs in rural areas, ensuring consistent healthcare delivery. By improving accessibility to incentive payments, the changes are expected to encourage more general practitioners to consider working in rural settings. This is seen as a critical step in addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in these areas, a long-standing issue that affects patient care and outcomes.
