Harriet Shing Takes on Health Portfolio

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has welcomed the appointment of the Hon. Harriet Shing MP as Victoria’s new Minister for Health, announced by Premier Jacinta Allan following a cabinet reshuffle on 16th April 2026.

Dr Anita Muñoz, Chair of RACGP Victoria, expressed optimism about working with Minister Shing to address growing demands in general practice. The RACGP aims to ensure that general practices receive the necessary support to handle increasing patient needs. The organisation believes that strengthening the workforce and integrating care across the health system are crucial steps.

Dr Muñoz stated, “We congratulate Minister Shing as she steps into this critical new role and look forward to working collaboratively to ensure general practice is properly supported amidst growing patient demand.”

Focus on General Practice Support

RACGP highlighted the importance of improving affordability and integrating care across the health system. Dr Muñoz emphasised the need for patients to access GPs regardless of their location or financial situation. Ensuring that patients can see a GP when needed is a key priority for the organisation.

The RACGP expressed its gratitude to the outgoing Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, acknowledging her contributions during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Muñoz thanked Minister Thomas for her service, saying, “Her engagement with the health sector has been important in progressing reforms to improve patient care and system sustainability.”

The RACGP remains committed to collaborating with the Victorian Government to ensure a robust and sustainable primary care system, which it sees as essential for delivering better health outcomes for all Victorians. According to Dr Muñoz, “A well-supported general practice sector is essential to delivering better health outcomes for all Victorians.”

The organisation has set standards for general practice, facilitates lifelong learning for GPs, and connects the general practice community to support improved health and wellbeing. As patient demand continues to rise, the RACGP emphasises the importance of a well-supported general practice sector. Ensuring a strong primary care system is fundamental to reducing hospital pressures.
