Record Numbers for Greyhound Puppy Auction

Increased Participation from Breeders

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) is set to host its largest Puppy Auction to date, with around 200 greyhounds expected to go under the hammer on 28th June at Richmond. This significant event has attracted a record number of nominations, reflecting a surge in interest from breeders, particularly from the younger generation.

GRNSW received almost 300 nominations for this year’s auction, surpassing last year’s 169 catalogued and the 145 in the inaugural 2024 auction. Brian Charman, GRNSW’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are thrilled with the response we have received from breeders wanting to be involved in this year’s Puppy Auction.”

Despite the high number of nominations, due to logistical constraints, the final catalogue will feature around 200 greyhounds. Breeders with multiple nominations had the opportunity to choose which pups remained in the auction. However, this has not dampened enthusiasm, as the quality of entries is expected to attract significant interest from potential buyers.

Auction and Race Series Changes

GRNSW has also introduced changes to its race series accompanying the auction. The 2027 Puppy Classic Series will include three Regional Heats and Finals across distances from 300m to 500m, each offering $10,000 to the winner. A Major Final over 500m+ will feature a total prize pool of $150,000, with $100,000 awarded to the winner.

Charman explained, “Feedback from participants suggested spreading prizemoney across multiple events, which we believe will benefit a wider variety of greyhounds and encourage more buyers.” This adjustment is expected to resonate well with participants, as it offers more opportunities for greyhounds purchased at the auction.

In addition, each series will carry a $500 Breeder’s Bonus for all greyhounds nominated, limited to one payment per greyhound. This initiative aims to further incentivize breeders and buyers alike.

Prospective buyers must register with the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission to participate in the auction. The eagerly awaited catalogue will be available online by 29th May on thedogs website. The anticipation is high, and GRNSW expects a robust turnout at the auction.
