Surge in Interest for the Australian Superfruit
Australians flocked to the Queen Garnet plum website, causing it to crash after Chris Hemsworth featured the fruit in his health and wellness series, ‘Azza & Zoc Do Earth’. The fruit, developed since 1997 by Queensland Government plant scientists, boasts six times the antioxidants of blueberries and twenty times those of conventional plums.
Since its development through traditional, non-GMO cross-breeding techniques, the Queen Garnet has become a focal point for research due to its potential health benefits. Bonney Ghosh, Nutrafruit Chair, explained that Hemsworth’s focus on the plum in the series finale sparked nationwide inquiries. Hemsworth discovered the growing research while working on his series.
Scientific Backing for the Queen Garnet
Four Australian universities have explored the plum’s effects on brain health, cognitive aging, gut health, and metabolic health. One study showed that Queen Garnet juice could reverse obesity in rats on a high-fat diet. Researchers have identified a gut–brain connection, with the plum’s anthocyanins being converted into brain-active compounds by the gut microbiome.
Pilot trials have reported encouraging results on human cognition, suggesting the fruit’s potential for supporting brain health. Ghosh noted, “The Chris Hemsworth feature undoubtedly brought enormous attention to the story, but what’s really resonated with Australians is the combination of homegrown innovation, natural wellness, and genuine science behind the Queen Garnet.”
Now that the Queen Garnet website is back online, consumers can explore products like Nectar and Powder derived from the plum. Nutrafruit, supported by the Queensland Government, is the exclusive distributor of the Queen Garnet. Known as everything from a ‘miracle fruit’ to the ‘Ozempic plum’, the fruit’s extensive research and development have laid the foundation for its current popularity.
