Call to Reward Smart Energy Use in Australia

Dynamic Pricing Could Save Billions

Rewiring Australia is advocating for dynamic pricing to encourage smart energy use. The organisation cautions that reforms relying on higher fixed charges may negatively impact households.

Australia’s electricity system must evolve to match current energy generation and consumption patterns, according to Francis Vierboom, CEO of Rewiring Australia. He emphasised the urgent need to transition away from the old model that charges based on usage.

“The old system charged you for how much electricity you used. The new system needs to reward you for when you use it,” said Mr. Vierboom. He highlighted the benefits of using solar power during midday to charge batteries.

Potential Impact of Fixed Charges

Higher fixed charges may discourage investment in solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles, warned Mr. Vierboom. These technologies are crucial for a more cost-effective and sustainable grid.

Dynamic pricing could lead to substantial household savings, according to new modelling by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). Mr. Vierboom mentioned that correct design could save billions over time, in addition to current savings from renewable energy.

“A battery that charges on midday solar and powers the evening peak is doing real work for the grid. An EV that charges when the sun is shining is saving everyone money. That’s the behaviour we need to reward – and that’s what dynamic pricing does,” stated Mr. Vierboom.

Initiatives like Cheaper Home Batteries are already boosting national assets significantly. Electric vehicle (EV) batteries are expected to enhance these benefits further, as noted by Rewiring Australia.

Rewiring Australia suggested a method to recover network costs based on the property’s connection rather than uniformly across all accounts. This approach aims to balance costs and promote renewable investments.

Mr. Vierboom concluded, “If we get the balance right, this is how we deliver a cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable grid for everyone.” He added that the organisation’s proposal could improve the electricity system by aligning with modern energy practices.

Rewiring Australia’s proposal includes recovering residual network costs in a way that better reflects the property being connected. This strategy can ensure that the grid remains affordable and efficient. Contact details: Eliot | 0423 921 200
