Landmarks of the Scenic Rim Reach New Milestones

Queensland’s Scenic Rim hosts five iconic venues celebrating significant anniversaries, highlighting their roles in the region’s vibrant history. Among these landmarks is the Royal Hotel in Harrisville, which has been serving patrons for 151 years, and the Dugandan Hotel in Boonah, now 140 years old.

Established in 1875, the Royal Hotel is the oldest pub in the Scenic Rim. It stands as a central gathering place for Harrisville, renowned for its live music and welcoming atmosphere. Notably, patrons claim it is haunted by the ghost of its first publican, Margaret Wholey. Over the years, the Royal has survived multiple fires, including a significant one in 1916, and was featured in the ‘Fat Cow Motel’ mini-series in 2003.

Boonah’s Dugandan Hotel, affectionately known as ‘The Dugie,’ started as a general store in the 1880s before it became a hotel in 1913. Today, it remains a popular destination for locals and tourists, offering expansive views and a laid-back atmosphere in its beer garden, ‘The Chook Yard.’ Originally established by Carl Stumer, this hotel quickly became a social hub for farmers and travellers.

St Bernards and Canungra Hotel’s Historical Significance

Offering breathtaking views and resident St Bernard dogs, St Bernards Hotel on Tamborine Mountain boasts 111 years of history. It evolved from a guest house to a licensed hotel in 1915 and continues to attract visitors with its charm and history. The hotel remains a must-visit destination.

Celebrating its centenary in 2026, Canungra Hotel is known for its distinctive black-and-white paintwork. It remains an integral part of the community, providing a social hub with hearty meals and historic charm. Over the years, the hotel has hosted numerous events and gatherings, cementing its place as a community cornerstone.

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, marking 100 years, is Australia’s oldest family-owned ecotourism retreat. Located in Lamington National Park, it has pioneered sustainable tourism and is home to various rare wildlife, including the regent bowerbird. Guests can explore the surrounding rainforest and experience the natural beauty of the Scenic Rim.

Rich in history and natural beauty, the Scenic Rim stretches from Canungra to Tamborine Mountain, offering experiences from gourmet food to adventure parks. Visitors can explore this region just an hour from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It is a destination combining history, culture, and nature, providing a perfect escape for those seeking a unique experience.
