Rebranding and Strategic Expansion
On April 8, 2026, Sumitomo Corporation, in collaboration with SMBC Aviation Capital, Apollo, and Brookfield, finalised the acquisition of Air Lease Corporation, rebranding it as Sumisho Air Lease Corporation. This deal marks a pivotal moment in the aviation leasing sector.
“We are delighted to announce the completion of the acquisition of Air Lease Corporation together with our co-investors SMBC Aviation Capital, Apollo, and Brookfield,” said Takao Kusaka, Group CEO of the Transportation & Construction Systems Group at Sumitomo Corporation.
Strategic Growth and Industry Impact
By enhancing Sumisho Air Lease‘s financial foundation, the acquisition is set to bolster its market position. SMBC Aviation Capital now handles the majority of Sumisho Air Lease’s fleet, with an orderbook of approximately 420 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. This expansion is vital for meeting the evolving demands of airline clients.
With over 1700 aircraft across more than 170 airline customers globally, Sumisho Air Lease gains a competitive advantage through SMBC Aviation Capital’s industry-leading capabilities. The transaction, initially announced in September 2025, was valued at about $7.4 billion, or $28.2 billion when including debt obligations, emphasizing its strategic significance.
Following this acquisition, Sumisho Air Lease is well-positioned to pursue its long-term strategic objectives. The collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation and SMBC Aviation Capital aims to solidify its presence in the aviation leasing industry.
Air Lease’s orderbook has been transferred to SMBC Aviation Capital, significantly expanding its orderbook with a diverse range of aircraft models from leading manufacturers. Upcoming industry events will detail the strategic steps for Sumisho Air Lease, focusing on integrating operations and seizing growth opportunities.
This acquisition is a monumental step for Sumitomo Corporation and its partners, representing a transformative move for the global aviation leasing industry. The collaboration is expected to unlock meaningful synergies and support sustainable growth.
