Australian satirical workplace comedy The Sonny Disposition will premiere on 1st September across Stan, 9Now and 9Go!.
Created by Simon Taylor and Josh Samuels, the series follows an ambitious podcast host trying to climb the rankings with the help of a chaotic team, while his personal life falls apart in the background.
The show is set in the world of podcasting, creator culture and modern media, taking aim at podcast fame, creator burnout, audience obsession and the pressure to stay visible online.
Taylor, a comedian and writer who has appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, began developing the idea after gaining access to a large, fully furnished office space in Coburg.
He called long-time collaborator Samuels to see the space. By the time Samuels arrived, Taylor had already written the first scene of what became The Sonny Disposition.
The pair spent days improvising scenes and building the show’s world from the office environment. Six weeks later, the pilot had been written, cast, filmed and edited.
Less than a year later, the project secured funding for a full season.
A workplace comedy about podcast fame
The Sonny Disposition was filmed in Collingwood, Melbourne, and is described as a satirical workplace comedy about the ego-driven side of podcasting and modern media.
The creators describe podcasting as “the Wild West of the media world”, with the series looking at a space where personality, attention and visibility can become part of the job.
The show also explores ambition, relevance, outrage-driven media and what happens when creators turn their lives into content.
The Sonny Disposition premieres on 1st September on Stan, 9Now and 9Go!.
