Initiative Enhances Safety Standards in Early Education
SYDNEY — Uniting has announced the implementation of its Child Safe Action Plan, enhancing safety measures across its early learning centres in NSW and the ACT. The plan, in development since mid-2023, applies a comprehensive child-safe approach to all aspects of the centres, according to Nadia Petrovski, Head of Early Learning at Uniting.
The initiative, which has been operational for over three years, was designed with input from children and families. It includes annual training for educators and the appointment of Child Safe Champions in each centre, Petrovski confirmed.
Implementation and Impact
Implemented in 44 Uniting Early Learning centres, the Child Safe Action Plan aims to ensure compliance with child-safe regulations. It features protocols such as displaying child safe standards, conducting thorough recruitment processes, and maintaining dedicated feedback channels. The plan’s success is evident in positive feedback from families, who report feeling safe and valued, Petrovski added.
This announcement comes as the Senate inquiry into the quality and safety of Australia’s early childhood education prepares to report findings at the end of March. The proactive measures by Uniting position it as a leader in the sector, setting a benchmark for safety practices.
In addition to the core components, the Child Safe Action Plan promotes an inclusive environment where children are encouraged to express their thoughts and concerns. The centres have established child-friendly reporting mechanisms that empower children to voice any issues they encounter. This child-centric approach ensures that the voices of the youngest members are heard and respected.
Uniting’s commitment to child safety is further demonstrated by its collaboration with local communities and child protection agencies, fostering a network of support and accountability. By working closely with these organisations, Uniting ensures that its strategies remain relevant and effective, adapting to the evolving needs of children and families.
The organisation plans to regularly review and update the Child Safe Action Plan, incorporating new research and best practices to continuously strengthen its safety framework. Through ongoing assessment and community feedback, Uniting aims to refine its approach, ensuring that its centres remain safe havens for early childhood education.
