Sustainability Efforts Expand with New Chargers
Uniting has announced the installation of 42 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across 21 residential aged care sites in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The initiative, in partnership with Origin Energy, aims to support staff and residents by providing convenient charging options.
According to Michael Mathias, Environmental Sustainability Manager at Uniting NSW.ACT, the new chargers will address range anxiety and improve operational resilience by locating charging facilities close to workplaces.
"With the additional 42 chargers across 21 sites, it will provide comfort to those who are worried about where they can charge their electric cars and will enhance operational resilience by having charging stations near their place of work," Mathias stated.
Aligning with Carbon Neutral Goals
Uniting's EV charger rollout is part of its broader sustainability strategy to reduce carbon emissions from buildings, energy use, and operations. The organisation has already started transitioning its vehicle fleet, which currently includes 12 EVs and 30 charging stations, with plans for full electrification in the future.
In 2024, transport contributed significantly to Uniting's environmental footprint, with its vehicle fleet consuming 909 kilolitres of fuel, accounting for around 13 per cent of total energy use and approximately 7.5 per cent of carbon emissions.
Alice Salomon, Head of Advocacy at Uniting NSW.ACT, expressed commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. "Uniting is committed to being carbon neutral by 2040 and electrifying our fleet is a fantastic opportunity to reduce emissions and support our staff and residents to make the switch to EVs," she remarked.
The EV charger installations are set to commence at the end of the month, accompanied by an EV roadshow to address any questions employees might have.
Uniting NSW.ACT, with 13,000 team members, serves over 150,000 clients across NSW and the ACT, contributing to the work of the Uniting Church through social justice advocacy and community services.
