New Uniform Hijab Marks Inclusivity Effort

SYDNEY — Uniting NSW.ACT has introduced an optional corporate hijab for its employees, making it one of the first Australian community service providers to offer such an inclusive garment. The hijabs, available in light grey and lillypilly, have been designed in collaboration with staff to ensure comfort and style, according to the organisation.

Uniting’s CEO Tracey Burton stated that the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to embracing and celebrating the diversity of its workforce. “Providing an on-brand hijab for staff who identify as Muslim is a deliberate act of inclusion,” she said.

Inclusivity in Action

Fatemah Daizli, a Lebanese Australian Muslim and specialist coach at Uniting, expressed her enthusiasm for the new hijab, noting its appeal especially for those working with children. “Having a corporate hijab shows how inclusive Uniting is,” she said. The hijab’s release coincides with Harmony Week, emphasizing the organisation’s dedication to cultural diversity.

Shami Moon Nahar, Chair of Uniting’s Cultural Diversity Network, highlighted the hijab as a tool of personal expression, reflecting the varied styles of Muslim women from different countries. This initiative is part of Uniting’s broader goal to foster an inclusive, connected, and just community.

In addition to the corporate hijab, Uniting is implementing various other diversity initiatives. These include cultural awareness training, support groups, and mentorship programmes aimed at empowering employees from diverse backgrounds. The organisation believes these efforts will not only benefit employees but also enhance service delivery to the community. By integrating diverse perspectives and experiences, Uniting aims to create a work environment where everyone feels respected and valued.

The introduction of the corporate hijab is expected to inspire other organisations to adopt similar inclusive measures. Uniting hopes to set a precedent that encourages the corporate world to embrace diversity beyond token gestures, fostering genuine equality and respect. As Uniting continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to being a leader in inclusivity and diversity, ensuring a welcoming space for all employees.
