New Housing Provides Fresh Start for Veterans

MELBOURNE — Vietnam War veteran Jeff Swain has found a new home following the devastating bushfires in Victoria, thanks to the support of the veteran community. Swain’s house in Highlands, near Seymour, was destroyed by fire on January 9, 2026, leaving him and his dog Geordie without shelter. Vasey RSL Care stepped in, providing Swain with a permanent home at their new Ex-Service Accommodation site in Bundoora.

The Bundoora development, completed in December 2025, offers 20 new single-storey units designed to address the growing need for veteran housing. Jeff Swain and his dog have settled into their new home, marking a hopeful new beginning. Swain shared how the experience of losing his home reminded him of previous bushfire threats, stating, “Bushfires remind you how quickly everything can change. What makes the difference is knowing there are people and organisations who step in and help.”

Community Efforts in Action

Vasey RSL Care CEO Janna Voloshin emphasised the importance of providing secure housing in times of crisis, noting, “At Vasey RSL Care, we exist to serve those who served. Our focus is on offering practical support that helps veterans recover and rebuild.” Other community support included emergency accommodation from The Highlands Caravan Park and assistance from various RSL branches and veteran associations.

This initiative comes amid increasing demand for veteran housing solutions. Vasey RSL Care’s programme continues to provide affordable, long-term housing across Victoria, ensuring veterans like Jeff Swain not only have a roof over their heads but also a supportive community around them. The commitment to veteran welfare serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, illustrating the power of community action in the face of adversity. With ongoing support, more veterans are expected to benefit from these housing projects, fostering a sense of stability and belonging in their lives.
