Perth's Youth Homelessness Crisis Demands Urgent Action

PERTH — A significant shortage in youth crisis accommodation has been exposed in Perth, with only three beds available for 73 young people sleeping rough, according to new data from the Ending Child and Youth Homelessness coalition. The report highlights the acute need for more resources in the city.

The coalition’s audit, conducted in February 2026, reveals that despite having 341 beds designated for youth across the Perth metropolitan area, none offer low-threshold, 24/7 support or respite night services. This shortage has left many young people without shelter, with key suburbs like Perth, Fremantle, and Victoria Park bearing the brunt of the crisis.

Calls for Government Investment

The coalition, which includes Shelter WA and Mission Australia, is urging the state government to invest $150 million into accommodation and prevention initiatives. Louise Giolitto, CEO of WA Council of Social Service, stated, “This data lays bare a crisis no child should ever have to face. Young people are sleeping rough, couch surfing, or turning up at services that have no beds left.” The coalition’s pre-budget submission outlines the need for diverse accommodation models and increased social housing.

Elise Jorgensen, Homelessness Regional Leader at Mission Australia, emphasised the need for immediate action, noting the rise in requests linked to family violence and mental health issues. Michelle Jenkins, CEO of Youth Futures, highlighted the bottlenecks in the current system, which prevent young people from transitioning to stable housing. Both leaders call for immediate government intervention to address the crisis.

The situation is dire and requires a multi-faceted approach from both government and community organisations. Additional funding is necessary not only for emergency accommodations but also for long-term solutions that address the root causes of youth homelessness. Community engagement, mental health support, and educational opportunities are crucial for providing a pathway out of homelessness for these young individuals.
