Volunteers Provide Vital Support Amid Rising Need
The St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies SA) is honouring its 2500 volunteers during National Volunteer Week, recognising their essential role in supporting communities across South Australia.
Impact of Volunteers During Challenging Times
Vinnies SA volunteers continue to offer crucial assistance to those experiencing hardship, homelessness, and isolation, especially as new data reveals increasing financial struggles among Australians.
The 2026 Vinnies YouGov Cost-of-Living Report indicates that 55% of Australians are facing tough times, with one in three lacking a financial safety net. Vinnies SA CEO Clinton Jury noted that these statistics reflect the daily experiences of volunteers.
“Our volunteers see the reality behind these statistics every single day,” said Mr Jury. “They meet people who are skipping meals, families on the brink of crisis, and individuals escaping violence.”
In South Australia, Vinnies volunteers contribute thousands of hours through services such as Fred’s Van meal services, providing direct financial aid, and offering crisis accommodation. These efforts are vital as more than half of Australians report financial difficulties.
Vinnies SA operates 32 Vinnies shops, offering clothing and essentials to those in need, and provides support for refugees and asylum seekers. Volunteers also assist with warehouse logistics, advocacy, and governance roles.
Mr Jury emphasised the diverse backgrounds of the volunteers, stating, “There is no single type of Vinnies volunteer. They come from all walks of life, providing meals, sorting donations, and offering a listening ear.”
During National Volunteer Week, Vinnies SA not only thanks its current volunteers but also encourages others to join, highlighting the personal benefits such as connection, purpose, and a greater sense of community.
The St Vincent de Paul Society has served the South Australian community for more than 140 years, focusing on food, clothing, shelter, and capacity building to support those in need.
Together, these volunteers enable Vinnies SA to support almost 60,000 South Australians every year, demonstrating the profound impact of their collective efforts.
