National Pear Week Highlights Benefits

Australians face increasing supermarket prices, and pears are emerging as cost of living heroes. National Pear Week celebrates the fruit’s benefits from 25th to 31st May. Experts highlight pears’ alignment with trends in gut health and fibre intake without the high cost of many wellness products. Despite their health benefits, pears are often overlooked, with consumption declining over the past decade. Ben Apted, a pear grower from Apted’s Orchards near Melbourne, explained that changing consumer habits have challenged pear growers. “For a long time, pears probably lost a bit of popularity because people weren’t always getting the best eating experience,” he said.

Community-based food networks like Box Divvy report increasing interest in pears as people seek affordable, healthy foods during the cost-of-living crisis. Co-founder Anton van den Berg mentioned that pears are nutritious, versatile, and remain relatively inexpensive. Dietitian Christina Ross considers pears a staple in her household for being affordable and long-lasting compared to other fruits. “Pears are one of those fruits that work across the whole week,” she stated, noting their use in various meals and snacks.

Research indicates that 83% of Australians fall short of recommended dietary fibre levels, and pears could help address this gap. The fruit is rich in fibre, supporting digestive health while being affordable. National Pear Week also aims to reconnect Australians with local produce, encouraging support for domestic growers. The event underscores the benefits of consuming seasonal foods like pears, which are both healthy and environmentally friendly. Pears appeal to consumers wanting less waste at home. They keep well and are easy to use across different meals, making them a practical choice for many households. National Pear Week is set to run from 25th to 31st May 2026, offering an opportunity for consumers to explore the benefits of pears and support local growers.
