Horrible Histories: Composer Edition to Debut
The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) will present a darkly humourous twist on classical music with ‘Horrible Histories, Composer Edition’ at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on 26th July 2026.
This unique concert, inspired by the successful BBC series ‘Horrible Histories’, will explore bizarre and often grim stories behind some of history’s greatest composers. It aims to show the human side behind the masterpieces through a blend of music and storytelling.
Among the highlighted stories, the event will recount how composer Henry Purcell allegedly froze to death after being locked out of his own home and how Jean-Baptiste Lully’s accidental stabbing led to a fatal infection.
Isaac Nathan, often described as the father of Australian music, met a tragic end as Sydney’s first recorded fatal tram accident victim in 1864. Meanwhile, French composer Ernest Chausson tragically cycled headfirst into a wall.
AFCM’s Unique Programme
The festival, which runs from 24th July to 1st August 2026, will feature top international musicians such as Stefan Dohr of the Berlin Philharmonic and Australian talents like Melbourne-born cellist Charlotte Miles. These artists will bring a mix of global excellence and artistic discovery to the event.
Charlotte Miles, who is now based in Germany, returns to AFCM after her impressive performance last year. She has established herself on the international stage with her expressive power and technical brilliance.
Jack Liebeck, British violinist and AFCM Artistic Director, stated, “This concert is a wonderful reminder that composers weren’t distant historical figures; they were people with extraordinary lives, quirks, and sometimes extraordinary bad luck.”
The Festival’s programme is supported by various organisations, including the Queensland Government and the Australian Government through Music Australia and Creative Australia. The Cairns Regional Council and the Ian Potter Foundation provide crucial backing.
Tickets and more information about the event are available at www.afcm.com.au.
