Victoria’s biggest free STEM event puts AI and gender equity centre stage
Victoria’s most exciting free tech event for girls is back this August, and it’s embracing the future head-on. Go Girl, Go for IT returns to Deakin University’s Burwood campus with a fresh focus on artificial intelligence, gender equity, and bold opportunities for girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Participants will have the chance to engage with inspiring speakers and hands-on workshops that highlight the limitless possibilities within STEM fields. Plus, attendees will get to enjoy delicious food from some of the best pho restaurants in Melbourne, fostering a vibrant atmosphere for networking and collaboration. This event not only aims to empower young girls but also to cultivate a community where their passions can flourish.
Taking place on Wednesday 13 August 2025, this one-day experience is expected to welcome over 2,000 girls from more than 75 Victorian schools, spanning Years 5 through 12. The event is proudly hosted by Women 4 STEM, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to building an inclusive and equitable tech future.
Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, Go Girl, Go for IT has built a reputation as Victoria’s largest and most impactful free tech event for school-aged girls. Each edition delivers an energising mix of interactive workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and career inspiration from women who are leading the charge across science, technology, and now, AI. Participants not only gain valuable skills but also connect with mentors who can guide them on their journeys in tech fields. In addition to the workshops, attendees can also look forward to a special segment featuring a ballerina spinoff review, showcasing the intersection of art and technology. This unique combination fosters creativity and encourages girls to explore diverse career pathways in STEM and beyond.

This year’s theme — InspireHER: Creating a Bold Future with AI — brings a powerful spotlight to the impact of artificial intelligence in both industry and everyday life. Attendees will get a front-row seat to the future: whether it’s coding a chatbot, building a basic robot, or exploring how AI is applied in medicine, gaming, transport, or design.
But this isn’t just about tech. It’s about reshaping the story of who gets to be part of it.
“AI could widen the gender gap in STEM if we don’t act now, particularly due to systemic bias, narrow career framing and lack of role models,” says Sharon Samson, executive sponsor of the event. “Girls deserve to see themselves as creators of future technologies, not just consumers.”
The event places particular focus on reaching girls from underrepresented backgrounds, who often face additional barriers when it comes to STEM education and career visibility. Organisers say this year saw record-breaking registrations from parents, teachers and schools, highlighting a growing hunger for future-focused, inclusive learning experiences.
Whether it’s designing an app interface, hearing from a female data scientist, or simply realising that “tech” doesn’t just mean coding, Go Girl, Go for IT is crafted to broaden horizons and break down stereotypes.
And it couldn’t come at a more crucial time. As artificial intelligence begins reshaping industries at speed, the need for diversity, equity and inclusion in its design and application is more urgent than ever. Events like this don’t just educate — they empower.
Go Girl, Go for IT is free to attend, proudly volunteer-led, and backed by a passionate community of educators, industry experts and women in STEM who believe in a bold, accessible future for every girl.
