Proposal to Adjust Allowance for Fuel Price Fluctuations
Facing the ongoing fuel crisis, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has submitted an application to the Fair Work Commission (FWC). They are seeking to increase the travel allowance for nurses and midwives using their personal vehicles for work purposes.
The ANMF, representing over 356,000 members, serves as the industrial and professional voice for nurses, midwives, and carers in Australia. On Monday, they submitted a request for a 12-month variation to the Nurses Award 2020. This request is intended to adjust the motor vehicle and fuel allowance, which is currently no less than $0.99 per kilometre, to reflect the rising fuel prices.
Federal Secretary Annie Butler stressed the importance of this adjustment. “It ensures fair compensation for our members who incur travel costs while delivering essential care across the nation,” she stated.
Impact on Healthcare Services
Many ANMF members have reported that the current allowance is insufficient for covering the increasing fuel expenses. This financial burden makes it difficult for them to afford work-related travel. workforce shortages are exacerbated, especially in aged care, affecting the availability of care for Australians.
Butler remarked, “Many of our members, especially those in aged care, are saying they simply can’t afford to go to work, exacerbating current workforce shortages and, most critically, leaving too many Australians without the care they need.”
This application by the ANMF is part of a broader effort, as other unions have also submitted applications to amend their respective awards. The collective movement is aimed at tackling the financial challenges brought about by fluctuating fuel prices.
The federation assures its members that they will be updated on the progress of the application with the FWC. This proposed variation to the Award is seen as a crucial measure to support ANMF members during the unprecedented cost-of-living crisis, ensuring continuous care for the community.
