Shelton Criticizes Use of Council Facilities
SYDNEY — Family First NSW Legislative Council candidate Lyle Shelton has urged the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to investigate Liverpool City Council. This follows reports that a council-owned facility was used for a memorial event for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, raising national security concerns.
Shelton highlighted the potential risks associated with using public venues to commemorate a figure linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a designated terrorist group. He stated, “Liverpool City Council should be investigated by ASIO to determine how a public facility came to be used for an event mourning the head of one of the world’s most violent regimes.”
Concerns Over National Security and Social Cohesion
The incident has sparked debate over the appropriateness of using public resources for such events. Shelton criticized Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun’s defense of the memorial, calling it troubling and urging the Liberal Party to distance itself from Mannoun’s remarks. “The Liberal Party should immediately distance itself from these remarks,” Shelton said.
Mr. Shelton also commended NSW Premier Chris Minns for condemning the event, emphasizing the importance of leadership in maintaining social cohesion in Australia. He stated, “Chris Minns deserves credit for being willing to call this out even though it risks offending sections of the Muslim community who support these figures.”
Shelton called on Liverpool Council to follow the Premier’s lead in ensuring that council facilities are not used to glorify figures associated with terrorism and violence. “Social cohesion in Australia depends on communities being united against Islamic terrorism,” he added.
