Many Pet Owners Lack Legal Provisions for Their Animals

SYDNEY — New research from Safewill has revealed that more than half of Australian pet owners have not included their pets in their wills. The data highlights a significant gap in estate planning, potentially leaving millions of pets without care if their owners die unexpectedly.

Implications and Expert Advice

Safewill’s Principal Solicitor Isabelle Marcarian stressed the potential consequences of neglecting to appoint a legal carer for pets. “Without clear instructions, pets may end up in shelters or become the subject of family disputes,” she explained. She advises pet owners to update their wills regularly and to ensure they nominate a trusted carer.

Amid increasing pet ownership and shifting perceptions of animals as family, this issue highlights the importance of integrating pet care into estate planning. Safewill is offering free will-writing services during Charity Wills Week to encourage Australians to address this gap.
