Funds to Boost Educational and Access Programs
SYDNEY — The Australian Museum has announced a successful outcome from its inaugural Giving Day, raising over $1 million. This achievement surpasses the initial goal of $750,000 by more than 30%, according to the museum’s statement on March 13, 2026.
The funds will support various educational and access initiatives, such as the ‘A Day at the Museum’ program, which provides underprivileged schools with museum visits that include transport and educational guides. Other beneficiaries include the Mini Museum preschool STEM outreach and programmes focused on First Nations and Pasifika culture.
Community Support and Future Plans
Kim McKay AO, Director and CEO of the Australian Museum, highlighted the community’s generosity, noting that a group of supporters pledged to triple public donations received on Giving Day. McKay expressed gratitude for the public’s trust in the museum’s programs, which aim to enhance learning and cultural understanding.
The museum’s Giving Day campaign, developed with Howatson+Company, featured engaging ‘Spokes-specimens’ from its collection to draw attention to the cause. McKay also mentioned that donations continue to be accepted, contributing to the Australian Museum Foundation’s efforts.
In the months preceding the event, the museum engaged in an extensive promotional campaign that involved social media outreach, partnerships with local businesses, and participation from renowned Australian cultural figures. These efforts helped to amplify the Giving Day message and encouraged widespread community involvement, ensuring the initiative was a resounding success.
This fundraising success aligns with a broader trend of cultural institutions ramping up community engagement and fundraising efforts ahead of significant anniversaries, as the Australian Museum approaches its 200th anniversary in 2027. The museum plans to use the funds not only for immediate programmes but also to build a sustainable model for future educational outreach and cultural preservation efforts.
