Global Sumud Flotilla Sets Sail
On 7 April 2026, seventeen Australians prepared to embark on the largest humanitarian maritime mission in history, aiming to deliver 500 tonnes of aid to Gaza. This mission, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, includes 100 boats working together to break the naval blockade that has restricted Gaza since 2007.
Essential humanitarian aid, such as food and medicine, will be provided to the people of Gaza. Participants come from diverse backgrounds, including former defence mechanics, doctors, and academics. Several members have already traveled to Spain and Italy to help prepare for the flotilla’s departure.
At 11 am on 8 April, a press conference will be held at Mrs Macquarie’s Point, overlooking Sydney Harbour. Originally set for Sydney International Airport, the venue was changed due to a last-minute refusal.
Jayden Kitchener-Waters, a Gomeroi and Ngiyampaa singer/songwriter, and Ethan Floyd, a Wiradjuri, Ngiyampaa, and Wailwan activist, will speak at the event. They plan to address the humanitarian challenges in Gaza and the goals of the mission.
Greens MLC for New South Wales Sue Higginson, Sheikh Wesam Charkawi from Western Sydney‘s Muslim community, and author Clementine Ford will discuss the significance of the flotilla and the ongoing situation in Gaza.
Ongoing blockades and recent legislation in Israel have worsened the humanitarian crisis. Since the announcement of a ceasefire five months ago, more than 680 people have lost their lives.
Amnesty International criticised Israel’s new death penalty legislation, which targets Palestinians, calling it a “discriminatory tool” in what they describe as a system of apartheid.
The flotilla aims to challenge these conditions by delivering aid directly to Gaza, raising awareness of the crisis, and advocating for an end to the blockade. As a result, this effort represents a global call for peace and justice.
