Depot Enhances Recycling Efficiency
Ballina welcomed a new Return and Earn depot on 5th June, streamlining the recycling process for residents by facilitating the easy return of bottles, cans, and cartons.
At 20-22 De Havilland Crescent, this depot is the first of its kind in the Ballina Shire Council area. It processes up to 100 containers per minute.
Local council representatives and community groups, such as Ronald McDonald House and Lennox Head Public School, attended the opening ceremony.
James Dorney, CEO of network operator TOMRA Cleanaway, remarked, “Ballina Shire Council residents are enthusiastic recyclers, having returned almost 68 million eligible bottles, cans and cartons through local return points since the scheme began in 2017.”
Recycling Process and Community Benefits
The depot provides ‘tag and drop’ and ‘tip and go’ services, which facilitate recycling for large volumes without pre-sorting. Recyclers can redeem refunds through vouchers or direct payments via the Return and Earn app.
Danielle Smalley, CEO of scheme coordinator Exchange for Change, emphasised the social impact, stating, “Return and Earn not only helps to achieve a cleaner and sustainable environment, it also delivers significant social benefits to the community as a key fundraising channel.”
Residents have the option to donate refunds to over 500 partners, including Lennox Head Public School, or support the statewide donation partner, The Smith Family.
The depot operates daily from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, making it a convenient choice for community recycling.
This new initiative is set to substantially boost local recycling efforts, with the depot’s advanced technology allowing efficient processing of large loads. Community members, including hospitality venues, cafes, and sporting clubs, will benefit.
In addition to the physical depot, the Return and Earn app provides flexibility with e-vouchers and direct bank transfers, enhancing the recycling experience for residents.
The Ballina depot’s opening strengthens environmental sustainability efforts in the region, highlighting the community’s dedication to green practices and charitable contributions.
