Tackling EU AI Act Compliance Challenges

Bureau Veritas has introduced an AI assessment for compliance to assist European enterprises in adhering to the EU’s AI Act. This initiative is in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), aiming to address the complexities of regulatory compliance in AI systems.

Since the EU’s AI Act took effect in 2024, businesses have encountered significant challenges. A report indicates that 68% of companies find it difficult to interpret the act’s provisions, while 60% have yet to establish the necessary governance for compliance. Non-compliance could result in fines reaching up to 7% of annual revenue.

Marc Roussel, Executive Vice President of Urbanization and Assurance at Bureau Veritas, stated, “We enable companies to better navigate the European regulatory environment and work more broadly towards the emergence of more responsible AI.”

The AI compliance audit service includes a thorough pre-audit, document review, on-site audit, and direct testing. It results in an independent maturity report covering eight critical areas: security, robustness, data privacy, governance, fairness, explainability, controllability, and transparency.

To develop this offering, Bureau Veritas relies on AWS AI Risk Intelligence (AIRI), an automated governance solution from the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center. AIRI automates document review and direct testing, reducing audit cycles from several weeks to a few days. This tool provides precise compliance insights and clear indicators for identifying AI system vulnerabilities.

“With this unique offering on the market,” Roussel added, “we combine Bureau Veritas’s expertise in compliance with AWS’s expertise in artificial intelligence.” The offering targets large enterprises and mid-sized companies in Europe.

Strategic Rollout Across Europe

The deployment of this service is set to commence in the second quarter of 2026. Initial rollouts will occur in France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Nordic countries. Bureau Veritas also intends to expand this offering globally, adapting AIRI to fit other regulatory frameworks and international standards.

In the UK, the service will align with international standards, such as ISO, ensuring compliance beyond the European framework. This strategic approach aims to provide companies with robust tools to manage AI risks and adhere to regulations effectively. According to recent updates, Bureau Veritas plans to deploy this offering beyond Europe, adapting AIRI to integrate other regulatory frameworks and international standards relevant to different regions.

Since the introduction of the EU’s AI regulation, the integration of AWS’s expertise has helped transform abstract governance concepts into measurable, actionable information. This enables companies to address compliance gaps efficiently and work towards responsible AI usage.
