California Upholds Kangaroo Trade Ban

Legislative Committee Blocks Kangaroo Product Bill

California lawmakers have once again supported the ban on the commercial trade of kangaroo products. This decision followed a vote by the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee, which rejected the bill aimed at lifting these restrictions. The proposed legislation, known as SB 1212, sought to allow kangaroo skins and meat products back into California, potentially opening one of the world’s largest consumer markets to these items.

Originally, California banned the trade in kangaroo products in 1971. Lawmakers also turned down a similar attempt to overturn the ban in 2015. Jenny Berg, California State Director for Humane World for Animals, said, “Today is a victory for kangaroos. Our state chose to protect this important, iconic species over participating in cruelty.”

The decision by California is significant on an international level, highlighting ethical issues concerning the kangaroo trade. Dr. Renae Charalambous, Wildlife Policy Programme Manager at Humane World for Animals Australia, praised the outcome. She stated, “Kangaroos are wild, sentient animals, not a commodity, and this decision recognises the serious welfare concerns associated with the commercial industry.”

Each year, more than a million adult kangaroos are killed, along with hundreds of thousands of dependent joeys. This occurs without independent monitoring at the point of kill and with limited enforcement, as noted by Humane World for Animals. By rejecting the bill, California has chosen not to support a market built on these outcomes. Dr. Charalambous noted, “It reflects growing global concern about the commercial killing of wildlife and reinforces the importance of strong protections.”

As a result, California’s stance reinforces its long-standing position on wildlife trade. This decision also signals continued international scrutiny of Australia’s commercial kangaroo industry. The action taken by California lawmakers will likely influence global perspectives on wildlife protection, serving as a model for ethical considerations in wildlife trade.

Humane World for Animals, formerly known as Humane Society International, is a leading voice in the animal protection field. With millions of supporters and operations in over 50 countries, the organisation addresses deeply entrenched forms of animal cruelty and suffering. Their commitment to a more humane world is evident in their efforts to end the cruelest practices and care for animals in crisis.
