Cremation Stones Gain Popularity Among Australians
Australian burial trends are changing as new research reveals a significant decline in traditional burials, with cremation stones gaining popularity. Concerns over burial space availability in major cities, which could reach capacity by 2036, contribute to this shift.
Research commissioned by Reterniti, a company offering Cremation Stones made from ashes, shows that 70% of Australians cite relocation and rising burial costs as major factors in the move away from traditional burials. These challenges make it harder for families to choose gravesites amidst their transient lifestyles.
The study highlights that frequent relocations (29%), high burial costs (25%), and the extensive land use by cemeteries (16%) lead Australians to seek alternatives. 14% feel that visiting graves is more confronting than comforting, indicating a shift toward more flexible forms of remembrance.
Shifting Preferences in Memorialisation
Cremation Stones, which can be kept at home or placed in meaningful locations, are gaining popularity. The research shows that 71% of Australians find comfort in keeping ashes at home, and 58% are open to dividing ashes among family members. These preferences highlight a desire for proximity and connection.
Peter Russell, founder of Reterniti, was inspired to create the Cremation Stone after observing that traditional burials do not fit modern lifestyles. “Traditional burial assumes families stay in one place, but that’s no longer how Australians live,” Russell explains.
As mobility influences modern households, Australians are exploring diverse memorial options. These include planting a tree with ashes (35%), creating a Cremation Stone (28%), or getting a commemorative tattoo (19%). Such options reflect a growing preference for memorials that fit around real-life circumstances.
LeAnn, a resident of regional Victoria, intends to honour her late mother by placing four Reterniti pebbles in locations significant to her family. These include her mother’s former home in New Zealand and a national park. This modern solution allows her to fulfill her mother’s wishes while maintaining a close connection.
The shift in burial preferences underscores a broader trend towards more personalized and flexible memorial options, aligning with the lifestyles and values of contemporary Australians. As a result, families are increasingly considering alternatives that provide comfort and convenience while honoring loved ones in a meaningful way.
