Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal Highlights Need

Alarming statistics from The Salvation Army reveal the severe impact of the cost-of-living crisis on Australian children, with some going entire days without food.

Recent survey data shows that 22% of parents reported their children went without food for an entire day in the past year. Meanwhile, families are taking extreme measures, with 86% of parents skipping meals so their children can eat. one-third of these parents face this hardship on a daily basis.

Major Bruce Harmer from The Salvation Army commented, “It is truly heartbreaking to think that our community’s most innocent and vulnerable, our children, are the ones bearing the brunt of the relentless cost-of-living crisis Australia once again finds itself in.”

Struggling to Afford Essentials

The survey also revealed significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Over 36% of parents were unable to afford doctor visits for their children. 24% could not pay for prescription medication, and 41% of parents with infants struggled to afford essentials like formula and nappies. As a result, many children are missing out on crucial healthcare and nutrition.

Today, The Salvation Army launched its annual Red Shield Appeal, aiming to raise $41 million by June 30. The funds will support services such as homelessness assistance, family violence support, and financial aid. The appeal highlights the growing need for community support as economic pressures mount.

Major Harmer stressed, “But we can’t do this alone. You can be the hope that our community desperately needs right now, so please support our Red Shield Appeal this year.”

The Salvation Army’s research surveyed 4,421 people seeking emergency relief. These individuals represent some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in society. Remarkably, 90% of those surveyed said they wouldn’t have managed without the Salvos. The organisation continues to be a lifeline for struggling families.

Across Australia last year, The Salvation Army’s network of over 400 centres and 2,000 services provided assistance to one person every 17 seconds. They offered more than 1.74 million sessions of care to over 228,000 people in need, over 1 million nights of safe accommodation, and more than 1.4 million meals to those who accessed their homelessness services. This extensive support network underscores the critical role the Salvos play in aiding those in crisis.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect families nationwide, the Red Shield Appeal stands as a beacon of hope. Through community contributions, The Salvation Army aims to alleviate the hardships faced by countless Australians.
