EV sales jump in July as Tesla Model Y leads deliveries

Tesla and Polestar deliver 4,921 BEVs in July 2026

EV sales for Tesla and Polestar reached 4,921 battery electric vehicles in Australia in July 2026, according to Electric Vehicle Council data. That compared with 1,147 deliveries in July 2025.

July was the third-highest sales month of 2026 for the brands included in the report. Only May and June recorded higher totals.

Tesla’s Model Y family drove most of the result. It accounted for 4,644 new vehicle sales in July.

The report also listed the Tesla Model Y L separately for the first time. The long-wheelbase six-seat variant has been on sale in Australia since 13 March 2026.

Across the first seven months of 2026, combined Tesla and Polestar sales rose to 29,711. That was 80.4% higher than the 16,466 recorded in the same period of 2025.

Victoria, Queensland, NSW and ACT

State and territory gains were broad in July. Victoria rose 500% from July 2025, Queensland increased 371%, New South Wales climbed 333%, and the ACT lifted 382%.

Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Julie Delvecchio linked demand to lower running costs, less exposure to petrol price swings and a wider range of models.

She said July stayed strong after the end-of-financial-year peak in June. “After a record end-of-financial-year month, we expected softer numbers in July. But the underlying trend remains clear: EV sales are well ahead of last year, consumer choice is expanding, and Australians are responding to lower running costs.”

Delvecchio also pointed to the year-to-date rise of 80.4% for Tesla and Polestar compared with the same period in 2025.

The Electric Vehicle Council records sales at the point of delivery rather than when customers place orders. As a result, the monthly figures show vehicles handed to buyers during that month.

However, the report does not cover the full Australian new vehicle market. It includes data from some brands only, while all car makers can submit figures for the free public report on a non-exclusive basis.

The council wants public data for all Australian new vehicle sales to improve transparency and consumer confidence. It is the peak national body for the electric vehicle industry in Australia.
