Bungalow 147 To Open On Williamstown’s Waterfront

on

Chef Deepak Mishra’s first restaurant will pair a 130-seat dining and wine bar space with private celebrations overlooking Hobsons Bay.

Williamstown’s waterfront will welcome a new restaurant and wine bar this summer, with regional Indian cooking at the centre of chef Deepak Mishra’s Bungalow 147 by the Bay.

Opening at 147 Nelson Place, the 130-seat venue will bring together a downstairs restaurant, courtyard and veranda, with private dining and event spaces upstairs. An exact opening date has not been specified.

For diners, the menu’s personal connection is to Odisha and Bengal, whose food traditions will inform Mishra’s cooking. Seasonal Victorian produce and native Australian ingredients will feature alongside flavours from across India, drawing on his European culinary training.

There will be snacks, smaller plates, substantial sharing dishes, breads and desserts. Individual dishes and prices are still to come.

“After almost thirty years in luxury hotel kitchens, I wanted to create something of my own. Bungalow 147 brings together my European culinary expertise, my Indian heritage and the style of cooking I’ve developed at Avani,” Mishra said.

His Melbourne career includes serving as Executive Chef at The Langham and holding Culinary Director roles at Pan Pacific Melbourne and Hotel Chadstone. At Avani Wines on the Mornington Peninsula, his work has brought regional Indian cooking together with Australian produce and wine pairing.

Odisha And Bengal Shape The Menu

Bungalow 147 gives Mishra a place to explore food traditions he believes deserve more attention in Melbourne.

“Eastern India has some of the country’s most extraordinary food, and it remains underrepresented in Melbourne. I’m excited to have the chance to bring those flavours to Bungalow 147 where everyone feels at home,” Mishra said.

Wine will be a substantial part of the offering. Avani’s second-generation winemaker Rohit Singh will help shape a list featuring boutique producers from Victoria and across Australia.

Cocktails will draw on tea, citrus, spice, tropical fruit and native botanicals. A selected whiskey offering is also planned.

A Heritage Building With Room To Celebrate

Inside the waterfront building, designer Micaela Cancino of Studio Argil has drawn on Indian bungalow culture. Lime-washed walls, aged timber, brass and soft drapery will define the interiors.

Downstairs is intended for everyday dining and drinks, while the upstairs rooms will accommodate private dinners and larger celebrations overlooking Hobsons Bay.

Bungalow 147 by the Bay is scheduled to open in summer 2026 at 147 Nelson Place, Williamstown.
