Rising Demand for Emergency Vet Care Support

The Cat Protection Society of Victoria (CPSV) is urging Victorians to donate to its Benevolent Fund, which provides crucial financial assistance for emergency veterinary care to keep cats with their families.

In 2025, over 55% of CPSV’s intake consisted of surrendered cats, highlighting the need for financial support to prevent families from having to give up their pets due to unexpected vet bills.

CPSV received 209 emergency support requests in 2025. More than 50 applications have already been received in early 2026. However, limited resources meant that 130 cats could not receive the necessary support.

Rachel Bitzilis, CPSV’s Marketing and Communications Manager, noted, “Cats are creatures of habit and thrive in familiar environments with the people they know and trust.” The Benevolent Fund helps mitigate financial strains caused by unexpected veterinary expenses.

A Lifeline for Families and Cats

The story of Lisa and her kitten Jasper illustrates the fund’s impact. Jasper required urgent care after ingesting a foreign object. The high cost of treatment left Lisa in despair until CPSV intervened with support through the Benevolent Fund.

Lisa shared,

Melbourne’s biggest moments, straight to you.
