Vaccine Aims to Enhance Health Outcomes

Australia’s Federal Government has announced the inclusion of the RSV vaccine in the National Immunisation Programme (NIP), a move welcomed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Scheduled for availability from 2026, the vaccine will be free for Australians aged 75 and over, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians aged 60 and over.

Targeted Protection for At-Risk Groups

This initiative focuses on protecting those at higher risk of severe illness from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Dr. Michael Wright, President of the RACGP, stated, “RSV can cause serious illness in older people, leading to hospitalisation, complications, and, in some cases, death.” The virus, often associated with infants, accounts for numerous illnesses and hospitalisations among older Australians each year.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians experience a higher burden of respiratory disease. The RACGP highlighted the importance of including these communities in the vaccine program. “This is a welcome and targeted decision that acknowledges the importance of equity in preventive healthcare,” Dr. Wright remarked.

General practices will play a crucial role in delivering the RSV vaccine, alongside existing immunisation programmes such as those for influenza and COVID-19. “GPs are trusted by patients to provide tailored advice about vaccination and timing, particularly for older people with complex medical needs,” Dr. Wright said. The inclusion of the RSV vaccine on the NIP supports continuity of care and ensures vaccination is delivered safely and effectively.

The RACGP encourages eligible Australians to discuss RSV vaccination with their GPs as part of comprehensive health plans. This aligns with the government’s ongoing investment in preventive health measures. “Ensuring vaccines are accessible to those who need them most is essential to closing health gaps,” Dr. Wright noted.

RACGP, representing general practice in Australia, continues to advocate for better health outcomes and supports initiatives that close health gaps. The organisation sets the standards for general practice, facilitates lifelong learning for GPs, and connects the general practice community. The introduction of the RSV vaccine reflects a significant step in reducing preventable hospitalisations and improving health outcomes for older Australians.
