Advanced Cooling for AI Infrastructure
On April 8, 2026, Digital Realty, the world’s largest cloud- and carrier-neutral data centre platform, announced the opening of its NRT14 data centre at the NRT campus in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The facility is the third addition to the NRT campus, joining NRT10 and NRT12, which opened in 2021 and 2024, respectively.
Adding NRT14 helps the campus approach an IT power capacity of nearly 100 megawatts. Developed by MC Digital Realty, a joint venture between Digital Realty and Mitsubishi Corporation, the data centre emphasises high-power, high-density environments. It features a hybrid liquid- and air-cooling system optimised for next-generation graphics processing units (GPUs), addressing the increasing demand for AI infrastructure.
Innovative Cooling Systems and Certifications
NRT14 is among the first facilities in Japan to receive the DGX-Ready Data Centre certification, which recognises its capacity to host advanced AI infrastructure. This ensures stable and efficient operations for high-density AI workloads exceeding 100 kilowatts, and supports applications like high-performance computing, machine learning, and virtual reality.
Kohei Yamashita, Representative Director and CEO of MC Digital Realty, expressed excitement about the opening, noting NRT14 as a significant step in meeting the Tokyo metropolitan area’s growing demand for scalable and flexible data centers. The incorporation of hybrid cooling technology allows NRT14 to provide colocation services up to 150 kW per rack, alongside a low-latency, high-speed network environment, meeting the needs of businesses requiring robust digital infrastructure solutions.
Digital Realty’s PlatformDIGITAL® will integrate NRT14, enhancing the company’s global IT infrastructure management across more than 300 data centers worldwide. This integration supports AI innovation across the Asia Pacific region. In addition, the data hall’s electricity consumption will be matched with 100% renewable energy through non-fossil fuel certificates, reinforcing Digital Realty’s commitment to sustainability.
Serene Nah, Managing Director and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, highlighted Japan’s pivotal role in the region’s digital infrastructure ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of scalable and highly connected data centers in supporting AI development. As Japan’s economy continues to grow, the demand for AI training and inference deployments is rapidly increasing, necessitating facilities like NRT14 to support this advancement.
