Diphtheria Outbreak Highlights Nursing Workforce Needs

Call for National Nursing Workforce Strategy

Australia faces its most severe diphtheria outbreak in over 30 years. This situation underscores the urgent need for improved workforce planning to ensure comprehensive health coverage in remote areas, according to the Australian College of Nursing (ACN). Dr. Zach Byfield, Acting Chief Executive Officer of ACN, stated that ongoing challenges in filling nursing and GP positions in remote and regional Australia are directly impacting the country’s ability to prevent and manage outbreaks like the current one. “Our health and workforce challenges are such that we cannot afford to continue to fly without a proper map,” Dr. Byfield said. “Now, more than ever, we need strong, secure plans to make sure every part of Australia has proper health coverage.”

In Central Australia, health leaders have highlighted the persistent struggle to fill nursing and GP positions in regional areas. This staffing issue complicates efforts to achieve vaccination coverage targets, especially during outbreaks where quick response times are critical. ACN is calling for the immediate release of the National Nursing Workforce Strategy to ensure effective planning and distribution of healthcare workers across the nation. Dr. Byfield emphasised the need for reform that allows health professionals to work to their full capacity. “We need funding reform that enables nurses to lead vaccination clinics where and when they are needed. Nurses are highly skilled, dedicated professionals, and we need to make the most of their expertise,” he added.

While vaccine hesitancy and pandemic fatigue are factors, ACN noted that access is a more significant barrier to immunization in many communities. “We need to make vaccines as accessible as possible to ensure every Australian, no matter where they live, is protected,” Dr. Byfield concluded. ACN stresses that enabling health professionals to operate at their full scope of practice is crucial. This would allow for more efficient vaccination clinics, addressing both current outbreaks and future health challenges.
