Focus on Election Conduct and Advertising Laws

Will host the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters for hearings on 4th and 5th May 2026. The sessions aim to review the conduct of the 2025 Federal Election.

Experiences of aggressive behaviour at polling booths have been reported across Australia. Committee Chair Jerome Laxale MP emphasised the need to understand these incidents to ensure a peaceful voting environment in future elections.

“People across Australia have told the Committee about their experiences of aggressive and confrontational behaviour at polling booths,” stated Mr. Laxale. He invites South Australians to share their 2025 election experiences during the Committee’s visit. Their evidence will help develop strategies to prevent poor behaviour in future federal elections.

Discussion on Political Advertising Laws

On the agenda for the hearings is an evaluation of South Australia’s Truth in Political Advertising laws. The Committee will assess their potential application to federal elections.

South Australians interested in participating can make a 5-minute statement at the hearings. To register, they should contact the Committee Secretariat. The hearings will take place at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, 65 Hindley St, Adelaide SA 5000. Those unable to attend in person can watch the live broadcast on aph.gov.au/live.

By visiting different regions, the Committee gathers comprehensive feedback. This method is essential for developing effective election protocols. Public input plays a crucial role in shaping the future of electoral conduct.

More details about the hearings and the ongoing inquiry can be found on the Committee’s public hearings webpage. The outcomes from these hearings may have a significant impact on future federal election protocols.

Ensuring transparency and integrity in elections is a key goal for the Committee. By addressing voter concerns and examining existing laws, the Committee strives to create a more accountable political system.

Programs for the hearings will be advertised on the Committee’s public hearings webpage as they are finalised. For media inquiries, contact Michael Butterworth at the Office of Jerome Laxale MP via email or phone.
