Google Partnership to Enhance Grid Resilience
Energy Dome and Salt River Project (SRP) have announced a partnership to introduce a 19 megawatt (MW), 10-hour CO2-based battery storage system in St. Johns, Arizona. Scheduled to begin in 2029, this venture will enhance energy storage technologies with Google’s support.
Located at SRP’s Coronado Generating Station, the project will operate under a 20-year tolling agreement. Energy Dome will manage the facility, while SRP will handle the energy dispatch. It aims to store enough energy to power approximately 4,275 homes for 10 hours.

Innovative Energy Storage Technology
The CO2 Battery technology works by compressing and storing carbon dioxide. When energy is needed, the CO2 is expanded through a turbine to generate power. This process supports Energy Dome’s strategy to invest in U.S. Supply chain development and enhance energy security with locally produced power.
Chico Hunter, Manager of Innovation and Development at SRP, commented, “As energy demand continues to grow, SRP is evaluating new energy storage technologies that could support SRP’s effort to diversify its battery energy storage portfolio as we work to meet the Valley’s growing energy needs with affordable, reliable, and sustainable power.”
Google will provide partial funding through a cost-sharing agreement with SRP. Following SRP’s 2024 Request for Proposals for long-duration energy storage pilots, this initiative is part of a broader effort to double SRP’s generating resources by 2035.
SRP and Energy Dome will collaborate with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to monitor the system’s performance. This partnership represents a key milestone in Google’s commitment to advancing grid resilience through innovative energy technologies.
Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery project is part of a larger collaboration aimed at improving sustainability, reliability, and affordability in energy storage.
