Strategic Step in Graphite Development

Westwater Resources, Inc. Has submitted a Section 404 permit application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for its Coosa Graphite Deposit in Coosa County, Alabama. This significant step is vital for the future development of the site, which is the largest graphite deposit in the contiguous United States.

Submitted under the Clean Water Act, the application addresses potential water impacts due to future development activities at the Coosa site. Westwater’s President and CEO, Frank Bakker, emphasised that this submission reflects ongoing progress in advancing Coosa through the permitting process.

Bakker remarked, “Coosa is intended to serve as a future domestic feedstock source for our Kellyton Graphite Plant, supporting our objective of developing a secure U.S. Vertically-integrated supply of battery-grade graphite.”

Environmental Review and Permitting

The Section 404 application follows an earlier permit application with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Together, these applications are part of Westwater’s strategy to navigate environmental reviews and secure necessary permits.

Listed on the federal FAST-41 Permitting Dashboard, Coosa’s development aligns with federal guidelines for environmental review. Westwater plans to evaluate a final investment decision after completing the permitting process.

The Coosa Graphite Deposit is located approximately 30 miles from Westwater’s Kellyton Graphite Plant in east-central Alabama. Coosa will provide a long-term domestic source of natural flake graphite, while Kellyton is being developed to process this graphite into battery-grade material, essential for lithium-ion battery anodes.

Coosa is the largest and most developed graphite deposit in the contiguous U.S. This asset supports Westwater’s vertically-integrated, mine-to-market strategy aimed at enhancing U.S.-based graphite production capacity for domestic battery supply chains.
