Concerns Over Farley's Conduct and Views

On 31 March 2026, Family First announced its decision not to preference One Nation in the Farrer by-election. This decision arises from serious concerns regarding the conduct and views of One Nation’s candidate, David Farley.n

Rebecca Scriven, who is standing as Family First’s candidate for Farrer, expressed deep reservations about Mr. Farley’s behavior. She stated, “Family First will not be preferencing One Nation in Farrer because we believe in respecting women and girls.”n

Scriven criticised Farley’s social media activity, which involved sharing sexually suggestive content involving young women. She highlighted derogatory comments he made about former Prime Minister Julia Gillard. These actions, she argued, raise significant questions about his judgment and respect for women.n

Community and Party Valuesn

Scriven explained that the concerns extend beyond a single incident. Farley’s behaviour sits at odds with the values of the local community. In 2024, residents of Albury strongly opposed a proposal to establish a strip club in the city. The community backlash led the council to reject the proposal, reflecting local values.n

She pointed to a broader pattern within One Nation of promoting individuals who exhibit a low regard for women. She mentioned a senior figure in Victoria who has publicly celebrated past involvement in running a strip club. This is concerning to many Australians, particularly parents.n

According to Scriven, Family First offers a clear alternative, focusing on the dignity of women, the protection of children, and the strengthening of families. “Preferences are not just tactical; they are a statement of values,” she emphasised.n

The by-election in Farrer is scheduled for 15 April 2026. Family First’s stance on preferences sends a clear message about its commitment to maintaining high standards in political representation.n

Scriven concluded by reiterating that Family First will not support candidates or parties that contribute to the degradation of women. “Our values are clear: we will not support candidates or parties that degrade women,” she said.n

The decision to withhold preferences is also influenced by the broader pattern within One Nation of promoting figures with controversial backgrounds. Family First’s approach aims to uphold the community’s standards and reflect its values. “People in Farrer want a family-friendly community that respects women,” Scriven added. “This is not just about one candidate; it’s about the need for higher standards in politics.”
