Committee Gathers Insights from Key Stakeholders
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Disability will conduct its final public hearings for the inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs on the 28th and 29th May 2026. These hearings are crucial for shaping future policy.n
Testimonies will be provided by peak bodies in the alcohol industry, academic researchers, and national service providers focusing on harm intervention related to drugs and alcohol. Participants include charities and Aboriginal health organisations, reflecting a broad perspective on the issues.n
Dr Mike Freelander MP, the Committee Chair, emphasised that “alcohol and other drug-related harm negatively affect tens of thousands of Australians each year.” He expressed eagerness for the insights these final hearings will offer, aiding the Committee’s deliberations for their report.n
Focus on Policy Recommendationsn
Dr Freelander stated that the Committee intends to “make meaningful policy recommendations to the Government in our report to enhance existing protections, interventions, and recovery support for individuals, families, and communities suffering from the impacts of drug and alcohol abuse.”n
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Federal Police will also present their findings, contributing vital data and perspectives to the inquiry. Their input is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the situation.n
These hearings will occur in Committee room 1R4 at Parliament House, Canberra, with online access available.
