Call for Collaboration on Infrastructure Planning
Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) is urging the Australian and NSW Governments to collaborate on a long-term infrastructure solution for the Blue Mountains freight corridor, following recent disruptions highlighting the corridor’s importance.n
Simon O’Hara, Chief Executive Officer of RFNSW, stated, “This goes well beyond the current issue. It’s about Governments working together for all road users, and making sure NSW has a resilient network capable of supporting growing freight demand, regional communities and the economy into the future.” He emphasised the need for alternative routes and revisiting the tunnel option.n
RFNSW highlighted the broader need for increased infrastructure investment across NSW, especially in comparison to other states that have secured significant freight and transport funding. New research from NRMA reveals the Australian Government’s forecast to increase fuel excise collection by $5 billion, despite reducing overall land transport infrastructure funding by $3.8 billion.n
“There’s increasing pressure on major freight corridors across NSW and industry has been calling for a stronger long-term infrastructure pipeline for some time,” O’Hara commented. “NSW cannot afford to lag in freight resilience and road infrastructure of national significance.”n
Recently, the NSW Government announced measures to enhance fuel security and transparency. Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, Planning Minister Paul Scully, and Minister for Industry and Trade Anoulack Chanthivong introduced a fuel security package. New legislation was passed to strengthen FuelCheck compliance and transparency.n
RFNSW welcomed these announcements, viewing them as recognition of the importance of resilient supply chains and infrastructure across NSW. O’Hara remarked, “Measures that improve transparency and strengthen confidence in fuel availability are positive steps, but resilience also means having reliable freight corridors, alternative routes and long-term infrastructure planning that supports regional communities and industry.”
