Grants Support Sustainable and Cohesive Communities
Applications for Greater Western Water’s Thriving Communities grants programme are set to close on 22nd April 2026. The initiative supports community-led projects that focus on sustainable water use and fostering community cohesion.
Eligible organisations within the Greater Western Water (GWW) region can apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Projects enhancing the environment and community resilience against natural disasters are particularly encouraged.
According to Kessia Thomson, General Manager Strategy and Partnerships at Greater Western Water, these grants are vital. “When communities are connected, prepared and supported, they are better able to withstand shocks such as drought, floods, storms and social disruption,” she stated.
Funding is available for programme coordination, materials, training, venue hire, project development, research, and evaluation. Incorporated or registered not-for-profit organisations are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
Local Impact of Grants
The Romsey Neighbourhood House, a notable beneficiary, used the grant to refurbish its community crisis support trailer. This trailer is essential for emergency response during floods, bushfires, and power outages.
“Without the GWW grant, we wouldn’t have been able to undertake the work needed to upgrade our invaluable community crisis support trailer, which was quite worn and run down,” said Michelle Balthazar, Manager at Romsey Neighbourhood House Inc.
Sue Hayes, Project Lead, highlighted that the trailer provides critical support services like mobile phone charging, hot and cold water, and cooking facilities. “There is no other service in the region that can provide this level of immediate community-based response,” she added.
Romsey is particularly vulnerable to severe weather events, making the community crisis support trailer a vital resource. The trailer includes showering facilities, refrigeration, and cooking appliances, offering swift assistance in emergencies.
Interested organisations should visit the Thriving Communities website for detailed information. The grants aim to empower local communities to address real needs and enhance their resilience.
Following the success of previous projects, Greater Western Water is keen to see applications that align with their goal of sustainable community development. This initiative reflects their commitment to supporting environmental care and community cohesion.
