Support for Trainers Amid Rising Fuel Costs

SYDNEY — Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has announced an increase in travel subsidies for trainers to offset the rising fuel prices caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Effective immediately, the subsidies will rise by 66%, providing much-needed relief to trainers across the state.

Trainers transporting a single greyhound to race meetings will now receive $100, up from $60, with those bringing multiple dogs receiving $60 per greyhound. This decision was swiftly approved by the GRNSW Board following a meeting this morning, according to a statement from the organisation.

Industry Context and Reactions

The increase in subsidies reflects GRNSW’s commitment to supporting its participants during a period of financial strain. “Every Australian is hurting with the escalation of fuel prices,” said GRNSW Chief Executive Officer Steve Griffin. “We had to do something immediately for our participants, and this is why we have taken the first step by a greyhound racing jurisdiction to increase our payments to trainers for travel.”

The initiative, set to run until April 30, has been welcomed by industry figures. Leading trainer Minnie Finn expressed her approval, noting that the change would particularly benefit smaller trainers. Meanwhile, Caitlyn Brewer, who regularly travels long distances for races, highlighted the importance of the subsidies in maintaining her income amid the fuel crisis.

As the greyhound racing industry faces these challenges, the increased travel subsidies aim to provide trainers with immediate financial relief, ensuring the continuation of racing activities despite the economic pressures.

GRNSW has long been an advocate for its participants, continuously seeking ways to alleviate the financial burdens they face. This latest move is a testament to its proactive approach and dedication to the well-being of the trainers. The subsidies are expected to have a positive impact on the industry, encouraging trainers to continue their participation in races and maintaining the vibrancy of the greyhound racing community in NSW.
