Subsidies Increased in Response to Fuel Price Surge

SYDNEY — Greyhound Racing NSW has announced an immediate increase in travel subsidies by 66% for trainers, in response to the escalating fuel prices caused by the Middle East conflict. The decision, effective from today, March 27, was approved at a specially convened meeting of the GRNSW Board.

The new subsidy rates see payments rise from $60 to $100 for participants travelling with a single greyhound to race meetings, while those with multiple greyhounds will receive $60 per dog. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on trainers, who often travel long distances to races.

Impact on Trainers and Industry Context

GRNSW CEO Steve Griffin noted the widespread impact of fuel price hikes on the industry, stating, “Every Australian is hurting with the escalation of fuel prices across the country.” The organisation currently allocates over $7 million annually for travel subsidies and has taken this step to provide immediate relief.

Leading trainer Minnie Finn expressed appreciation for the quick response, acknowledging that while larger kennels might cope better, smaller trainers will benefit significantly. Caitlyn Brewer, a trainer based in Woodstock near Cowra, shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this support for those in remote areas.

This move comes amid a challenging period for the greyhound racing industry, which relies heavily on travel for regular income. The initiative is set to remain in place until April 30, at which point GRNSW will reassess the situation and decide on any further actions.
